In my life, I've held lots of different titles, from lowly grunt to big cheese. But through it all, one thing's remained consistent -- my ability to communicate.
Sometimes, I do that by writing articles, press releases, social media posts, blogs and newsletters. Other times, I craft whole websites, sales and marketing pitches, industry white papers or educational courses. And lately, I've been knocking out product descriptions and SEO copy for e-commerce and other clients.
At the end of the day, I love the challenge of boiling down complex concepts into the perfect one or two sentences that create "Aha!" moments for people.
Need something communicated clearly and concisely? I'm your writer.
I LIKE WALKING IN OTHER PEOPLE'S SHOES ...
When a client needs product copy, I research the key needs it fulfills for consumers and the various ways it might be used. Then, I introduce the product's benefits within an everyday, emotional or aspirational scenario that the consumer might relate to or recognize as their own. The result? When you write copy that makes consumers feel seen and heard,
they don't hesitate to buy what they need from the brands that get them. Ta-da.
COPY DESIGNED TO DRIVE CONVERSIONS SHOULDN'T BE BORING ...
I love writing all types of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) copy, as it challenges me to bring even the most boring or lacklustre keyword strings to life. I do that by surrounding the terms with little bits of cultural flotsam and jetsam that I've collected over the years -- stuff like film-, music-, sports- and style-specific references -- that not only speak to the consumer in a language they understand, but also educate, motivate and drive conversions like crazy. Sometimes, I even get to be a bit funny. Sort of almost humorous. Well, by my standards, at least. Which are, admittedly, low. Very low. You'll see.
THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER ...
Why can't writers just stay in their lane? Why do they need to reach beyond their words and boss around people in the art department? Hey, don't blame us. The art department started it. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then we get to elbow our way into the studio once in a while to check that everything's punctuated correctly. I love helping small businesses read and look like they're worth a million bucks. I write all the website copy -- including call-to-action buttons, blogs and articles -- source the images, then work closely with a designer to ensure everything aligns for maximum impact.
OK, NOW YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR ...
Maybe. But sometimes, writers need to get out of their comfort zone to make things happen. I don't try my hand at creating original designs to go along with my copy very often -- and I'll be the first to admit, I'm not a trained graphic designer -- but motivating kids to recycle called for a radical response, so I dove in headfirst. To get the local kids in town to see recycling as something cool, I riffed on classic Star Wars moments (like Leia's one-sided declaration of love to Han) or dropped iconic Star Wars characters and the recycling symbol into viral memes that were making the rounds at the time (like Ryan Gosling's "Hey Girl"). The stickers were a BIG hit, and I got to let my inner Star Wars nerd fly free. Success all around.
